BREAKING: 44 confirmed coronavirus deaths in Dumfries and Galloway

A further six people in Dumfries and Galloway have lost their lives to the coronavirus pandemic in the past seven days.

The latest figures from the health board show that 44 people have now died from Covid-19.

As of May 11, 35 of the deaths were in hospital, with 79 people recovering from the coronavirus after being treated in hospital - up from 75 last week.

The National Records of Scotland bases their stats on the number of cases where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. Their weekly update has revealed that, by Sunday, the pandemic has claimed 3,213 lives in Scotland, 46 of which were in Dumfries and Galloway.

NHS Dumfries and Galloway chief executive Jeff Ace has warned that the situation remains “very precarious”.

He said: “We are faced with a highly infectious virus that will cause serious illness in a significant proportion of those infected for which we have very limited treatments.

“Covid-19 has a high mortality rate, particularly among older adults or those with co-morbidities. At the moment, it is estimated that only a very small percentage of the population has been exposed to the virus and that the vast majority of us have no acquired immunity.”
