Break-in accused granted release

Newcastle courthouse.

A YOUNG man allegedly found in the bedroom of an 84-year-old neighbour at Shortland early on Sunday morning has been granted conditional bail.

Sione Fili, 19, appeared in Newcastle Local Court in handcuffs on Friday, two days after he was arrested at home in Marsden Street and charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence with people there.

Police allege the 84-year-old woman was asleep about 3am on Sunday when she was woken by a man standing in her room.

The man spoke to the elderly woman before she called out to family members and he fled. Mr Fili did not enter a plea, but applied for bail, which was not opposed by prosecutors on the condition he live at an address at Raymond Terrace, report to police and abide by a curfew.

The matter was adjourned until February.
