Bread lorry appears to have sliced off part of roof after encountering low railway bridge

A bread van was parked up with damage to its roof after apparently colliding with a bridge which is regularly struck by vehicles too tall to travel under it.

The Kingsmill bread van was travelling along Victoria Road in Gowerton when it stopped after going under the railway bridge this afternoon.

The bridge is notorious for tall vehicles attempting to go underneath it coming into contact with it.

Alex Williams, who drove by minutes later, said: "I believe the top of the lorry is made of fibreglass, so it wouldn't have caused much damage to the bridge.

He added: "It was around 2.30pm, and it was still at the side of the road about an hour later, with another truck. The top had been ripped off it.

"There were also people who looked like they were from Network Rail, so they must have been inspecting the bridge".

Last October, a lorry’s roof was ripped off after travelling under the bridge . The collision prompted delays to rail services when they were put on reduced speed as a precaution.

It was the latest in a series of incidents, which has seen the bridge hit by vehicles thirty times over the past 11 years .

Kingsmill and Network Rail have both been contacted for a comment.
