Brazilian tanker stranded in quarantine on Firth of Clyde amid coronavirus outbreak

A 51,000-ton oil tanker from Brazil has had to quarantine in the Firth of Clyde after a coronavirus outbreak on board.

The Jane docked at Finnart oil terminal at Loch Long in Argyll on Friday before two crew members tested positive.

Health officials ordered it to be anchored off Largs until a new crew is found. The existing crew will be placed in a quarantine hotel for 14 days.

The 183m-long vessel will be deep cleaned before it can set sail. A source said: “The ship left Brazil on March 1. It seems strange they have Covid 19 on board having been at sea for so long.

“Nobody will be allowed to leave and I believe they are going to test all of the crew. The crew are from Brazil so it’s causing a real worry that we may see some of that strain enter Scotland.”

The vessel’s owners could not be contacted for comment last night. Clydeport, which looks after shipping in the area, said it could not comment.
