A player from the Brazilian top-flight club Internacional was sent off after confronting his own team’s jeering fans in the middle of a match.

Angry with the constant derision, Fabrício broke off from a dribble, passed the ball to a team-mate and then walked towards the crowd midway through the second half of Internacional’s state championship match against Ypiranga on Wednesday.

The left-back made several obscene gestures to fans, prompting the referee to immediately send him off. The crowd loudly chanted their approval when the red card was shown.

Fabrício then took off his shirt and threw it to the ground as several team-mates came over to try to calm him down. As he left the field to cheers, Fabrício could be seen telling fans he will never play for the team again. “I’m leaving, I’m leaving,” he shouted.

The club later suspended Fabrício while his team-mates left the stadium without giving media interviews.

Amid all this, Internacional won 1-0 to go top of the Gaucho state championship.
