Brazilian Football Confederation issue statement on Edu's future amid Arsenal links

The Brazilian Football Confederation have moved to clarify Edu's position with the national team amid links to Arsenal.

football.london reported last month that the former midfielder was viewed as a leading contender for the sporting director role at the Emirates Stadium and fresh reports in Brazil indicated a growing expectation that the 40-year-old will eventually leave his role with the national team and return to north London.

Furthermore, there had been claims that Edu had accepted an offer from Arsenal to start in his new role after this summer's Copa America, but it's now been confirmed that an approach has been made, nothing has been agreed just yet.

Edu to Arsenal explained: What is a sporting director and what do they do?

A statement via the Brazil FC reads:"Regarding the news involving the Coordinator of the Brazilian National Team, Edu Gaspar, CBF clarifies: "The Coordinator of Selections, Edu Gaspar, has a contract with CBF until the end of the Qatar World Cup 2022.

"Edu Gaspar informed CBF that he received a survey of an English club, who explained that at the moment he is exclusively focused on the Copa América Brazil 2019.

03) "Therefore, CBF denies any speculation around names for the position of Coordinator. The entity has clarity of qualities needed for this position, which unite administrative capacity and great experience in the field."

Previous comments from  Edu  suggest he could be more than happy to return once again to north London as speculation over his future grows.

Speaking in October ahead the international friendly between Brazil and Uruguay at the Emirates, he said: "It will be a great pleasure to go back to the Emirates, a stadium that’s home to a club I’m really fond of.

"I had the opportunity to play for many years with Arsenal and win some important titles.

"So, without a doubt, it will be a pleasure to see the red and white colours of Arsenal again in a stadium that is increasingly becoming more important in the world.

"I remember well that I played my last game alongside great friends like Dennis Bergkamp and other great athletes that were a part of Arsenal’s history.

"And just as I said earlier it will be a great pleasure to come back again now with the Brazilian team. It will be a great honour and I will certainly remember the great moments I had with Arsenal’s supporters."
