Brazil’s life-like doll trend sparks viral craze and debate

The trend has sparked a wave of reactions. While some see the dolls as therapeutic, others view the public displays, including birth roleplays and mall outings, as excessive.

In May, Rio de Janeiro’s City Council approved a proposal to recognise reborn doll artisans, pending the mayor’s approval. Meanwhile, other lawmakers have raised concerns about reports of people seeking medical help for the dolls, despite no official cases being confirmed.

At the annual reborn doll gathering in São Paulo’s Villa Lobos Park, enthusiasts defended the practice, saying the dolls offer comfort. Critics, however, argue that political attention on the issue detracts from more urgent national concerns.
