Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro had been taken to hospital in the capital to undergo tests for a possible intestinal obstruction.

Now he has returned home to Alvorada Palace after he was discharged from hospital, the President’s Office said.

Communications Minister Fabio Faria confirmed Mr Bolsonaro checked in at an army hospital in Brasilia on Monday evening.

Mr Faria said the president felt abdominal discomfort and he went to the hospital to be tested as he has a history of intestinal obstructions.

He stayed in hospital overnight under observation.

Mr Bolsonaro has been in and out of hospitals since an attacker stabbed him in the abdomen during a campaign event before the 2018 elections.

He has undergone seven surgeries since he became president in 2019.

The 67-year-old was taken to hospital in January for an intestinal obstruction that was later cleared.

Last July, he was rushed to hospital with strong stomach pains that were treated without surgery.

Mr Bolsonaro, who has begun campaigning for re-election in October, was due to attend a political meeting of the Republican Party but did not appear, local media reported.

An aide to the party’s president Marcos Pereira said at the event that Mr Bolsonaro had instead gone to hospital feeling unwell.
