Brazil legend Rivaldo tells Gabriel Jesus what he needs to do to earn a starting place at Man City

Brazilian football icon Rivaldo has told Gabriel Jesus that he needs to 'keep proving his value' in order to earn a starting place at Man City.

Despite missing two games through injury Jesus has had a bright start to the season in the Premier League, scoring in his first and only start against West Ham and picking up an assist.

As has been the story of his time at the club, however, he has found it hard to dislodge the never ageing Sergio Aguero who already has seven goals to his name this season.

Jesus was given his first start since the opening season in City's Champions League opener against Shakhtar Donetsk and an industrious performance was topped off by a finely taken goal late on.

Football legend Rivaldo was impressed by his fellow countryman's performance and has explained what he needs to do to earn a permanent place in the side.

Gabriel Jesus for Manchester City against Shakhtar Donetsk yesterday after some matches on the bench in the Premier League," Rivaldo told Betfair.

"He scored a goal at Shakhtar and gave another sign to his manager that he wants to play more often.

"It's important for the player to keep proving his value, as competition for places is beneficial to a team.

"Pep Guardiola has a fantastic squad and big players are benched in all their matches, so the most important thing is to keep playing well, with all players focused on the same goal which is winning every match."
