Brazil highlights familiar Roberto Firmino problem for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp

Roberto Firmino had a rollercoaster of a 2020/21 Premier League with match-winning performances but also some dips in form.

With 2022 World Cup qualifiers out the way, his attention now turns to the relocated Copa America, now being held in his native Brazil.

Despite a goalscoring season identical to the one which saw Liverpool crowned Champions of England, the Brazilian's performances on the pitch were disappointing in what was a collectively a below par display from Jurgen Klopp's side despite qualification for Champions League football next year.

"It’s been a difficult season for me," he admitted in April, prior to the quarter-final exit to Real Madrid.

"We have to be sincere, there’s no lack of hope for improvement. My desire is to evolve and grow every day. There’s no lack of motivation for me.

"I charge myself a lot. I know that I’m not at my best moment compared to the last few years. I always want to be helping with goals and assists, but that hasn’t been happening, unfortunately."

Recent performances, including Tuesday's 2-0 win over Paraguay, compile to illustrate the disappointment of the season.

The win ended a 35-year wait for an away win over their South American rivals as Neymar and Lucas Paqueta ensured Brazil's 100% record remained intact.

For Tite's Brazil, the 29-year-old continues to be an important member of the squad.

As he only featured for 15 minutes in the win over Ecuador on Saturday, he was given a starting role for the trip to the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, spearheading the attack alongside Premier League duo, Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus in his 50th appearance for Brazil.

However, it was an ineffective night for the Liverpool forward in his landmark game for Seleção as he failed to register a shot on target before he was replaced by Douglas Luiz with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Seemingly isolated, he couldn't manage to provide any key chances as he completed 15 out of 16 passes.

Despite the performance, there was cause for celebration as he joined the elite list of Brazilian footballers to make 50 appearances.

"It's incredible, very honoured, glory to God for that," he told CBF.

"(I'm) very honoured to have played 50 games with the national team, defending my homeland, it's really gratifying. I hope more games come and that I can make history with this shirt."

Firmino remains one of the most used players during Jurgen Klopp 's tenure and the German manager will be hoping that he can make his mark at the Copa America which kicks off on Sunday when Brazil face Venezuela.
