Brazil dam latest: 58 confirmed dead after search for missing people resumes following second burst fears

A fatal dam collapse in Brazil has claimed at least 58 lives as the official death toll rose again following more searches.

This comes after fears over a second dam caused the search to be halted earlier on Sunday.

Hundreds of people are still missing following the tragedy on Friday, while the death toll was previously stated as 40 then reduced to 37 without explanation, before this new figure emerged.

Flavio Godinho, a spokesman for the state civil defense agency, said the number is expected to continue to rise.

Previously he stated operations had resumed to find those missing since the dam burst at Vale's Corrego do Feijao iron ore mine on Friday.

Helicopters have flown over areas buried by mud and firefighters have worked to get to structures by digging.

Over the weekend, state courts and the justice ministry in the state of Minas Gerais froze about $1.5 billion in assets from the owners of the mine. Vale, for state emergency services and told the company to report on how they would help the victims.

Neither the company nor authorities had reported why the dam failed, but Attorney General Raquel Dodge promised to investigate it, saying "someone is definitely at fault."

Even before the half-day suspension of rescue efforts, hope that loved ones had survived Friday's dam collapse in the area was turning to anguish and anger over the increasing likelihood that many of the hundreds of people missing had died.

"I'm angry. There is no way I can stay calm," said Sonia Fatima da Silva, as she tried to get information about her son, who had worked at Vale for 20 years. "My hope is that they be honest. I want news, even if it's bad."
