Brazil coach explains why Manchester United midfielder Fred has earned recall

Brazil coach Tite has explained his decision to recall Manchester United midfielder Fred back to his international side for the first time since 2018.

Fred initially made his debut for the Selecao in 2014 and has earned 11 appearances to date, though he has been exiled for the past three years.

In fact, Fred has not made the Brazil squad since his move from Shakhtar Donetsk to United - with his last inclusion being for the 2018 World Cup, where he failed to make an appearance.

Now though, following on from a season where he has been a regular for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Fred has another chance with his nation.

Speaking to ESPN, Tite explained the reasons for his decision: “It’s because of his performances. The high level that he has been showing at United, a team that is runner-up in the Premier League.”

The decision earned a response from Fred on social media, who posted on Instagram: “Immense joy for returning to represent my country. Always proud to be selected. Let’s go again.”

Fred will now be pushing to come into the fold for the World Cup Qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay, with those games taking place in June.

The Copa America will also take place this summer and Fred will be looking to make an impression in order to earn a spot in the squad for that clash.

Brazil are looking to retain the trophy that they won back in 2019, which brought an end to a 12-year barren run in the competition.

Fred has played 46 matches for United across all competitions this season, scoring once and registering two assists.
