Brazil ‘centre of coronavirus pandemic’ with highest daily death toll

Brazil's virus crisis deepened as it recorded the highest daily death toll in the world for the fifth straight day.

Latin America’s biggest country saw an additional 1,039 Covid-19 deaths, taking its total to 24,512.

The figures emerged as the region was declared the new centre of the global pandemic by the Pan American Health Organisation.

A US travel ban took effect yesterday for foreigners coming from Brazil, where President Jair Bolsonaro has raged against state and local leaders enforcing stay-at-home measures despite warnings that the outbreak is deepening.

Brazil has about 375,000 confirmed infections — second only to the 1.6 million US cases — but many fear a lack of general testing means the toll is much higher.
