Brazen thief nicks city councillor's car then heads straight to Bargain Booze and Greggs

A brazen thief walked into a Liverpool community centre and stole a city councillor's car keys and bank card and headed straight to Bargain Booze and Greggs.

Tuebrook Councillor Steve Radford, leader of the Liberal group on Liverpool Council said his car keys were taken from the Tuebrook Hope Centre in Buckingham Road around 1.30pm this afternoon.

Cllr Radford and his colleagues were hosting an event for local pensioners when the brazen thief walked into the building and stole his keys and other valuables.

CCTV footage from a nearby building shows a man looking at various cars in the street before getting into Cllr Radford's red Suzuki hatchback.

The Liberal leader said he was able to track the movements of the thief because payments made on his stolen debit card.

He explained: "The car was stolen sometime around 1.30pm and then at 1.50pm there was a purchase on my card from Bargain Booze, followed by a purchase from Greggs at 1.56pm.

"They were obviously fairly modest purchases because he could do them with contactless."

"Its obviously a really frustrating thing to happen, but my bigger worry is that there were important documents for a charity that we run in the car and we really need them back."

He added: "People like this have no regard for the huge impact this kind of thing has on people's lives - all for a pasty and a couple of drinks."

Cllr Radford has reported the theft to Merseyside Police who have placed a marker on the vehicle.

The force have asked anyone with information to call 101.

Cllr Radford said he would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen his red Suszuki car, with a number plate of DX14 WJN on 07920090322.
