Brazen crooks try to rip petrol station ATM out with chains but leave empty handed

An Ayrshire petrol station ATM was targeted by crooks in a late night raid.

Cops are on the hunt for two men who attempted to steal cash from the standalone machine at the Shell garage on Prestwick Road, Ayr on Sunday night around 11.45pm.

Sources have told Ayrshire Live that the two suspects used a chain and dragged the ATM off its foundations, but despite their efforts left empty handed.

A source said: "The cash machine has been left lying in the middle of the forecourt, it has been completely torn off its foundations.

"The men responsible have used some amount of force to try and break into it."

Police have described both men as wearing dark clothing and both fled in a white Ford Transit pick up.

Officers are asking anyone who may dash-cam footage to get in touch as they seek to trace the men responsible.

Detective Inspector Andrea Templeton said: “We believe this was a targeted break-in and those involved left empty-handed. We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time.

“If you saw anything suspicious, before or after this incident, then please get in touch, particularly if you have dash-cam footage that may help with our investigation.”

"Anyone who can assist is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 4172 of Sunday, January 20, or make a call anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
