Bray rolls out red carpet as boxing champ Katie Taylor makes grand homecoming

 Bray rolled out the red carpet on Friday for their champion Katie Taylor after her historic win over Belgium's Delfine Persoon on Saturday night.

The 32 year Wicklow woman became the undisputed lightweight champion of the world after her closely fought win over the Belgian.

The 'Bray Bomber' was welcomed by fans from all over the country at the Bray seafront, with some travelling huge distances in order to meet their hero.

Katie was introduced by MC Des Cahill along with the majority of her family and her five belts to the Bray stage.

She told her Bray fans "I'm so, so grateful for the support I get in this town, the support and backing I get is amazing so I'm delighted to come back here as the undisputed champion."

Katie's manager Brian Peters described her as "inspiring and just so humble, she's a great role model to have and a great role model for Ireland to have."

Katie also compared the moment to the same as when she returned home after winning the gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012.

Fans were in great form as they spoke about the Bray fighter.

Superfan Darren told Dublin Live: "We live in Bray and Katie Taylor is a legend, it's a great moment for the kids."

Darren's daughter Mia went on to say that "she's the greatest boxer alive."

Another fan of Katie's, Ronan Collins from Ashbourne said that he "idolised” Katie from the very beginning and now his daughter, Lauren loves her too. Lauren has only just begun to box and looks up to Katie.

It was easy to see the impact Katie has had on young girls in Ireland. The crowd was full of excited youngsters, with some wearing boxing gloves in the hope their hero would sign them.

The question now on everyone’s lips, what next for Katie Taylor?

Katie said she’ll be looking forward to a rematch with Delfine Persoon but her manager said that there are “other plans set out” with the Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano being the preferred choice.

Katie is certainly hungry for more saying that “I have plenty of years left in me and the best is yet to come.”

No matter the decision on whether to fight Persoon or Serrano next, Katie will certainly be ready and have the full support of the Irish behind her.
