ST. LOUIS_Freddie Freeman and Adonis Garcia hit three-run homers and 35-year-old Roberto Hernandez _ known as Fausto Carmona until 2011 _ picked up the win in his first appearance with the Braves as Atlanta beat the St. Louis Cardinals 13-5 before a sellout crowd 45,468 at Busch Stadium on Saturday night.
It was the 16th home sellout of the season.
The Cardinals and Braves close out their three-game set Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
Hernandez, whose last start came on July 19, 2015, last picked up a win on July 3 of last season when he pitched a scoreless 10th inning in a 10-8 Houston win at Boston.
The Braves, who lost 1-0 on Friday on a gem from lefty Jaime Garcia, picked up an unearned run in the first after unpires overruled a forceout call at second, ruling that second baseman Matt Carpenter was off the bag when he received a relay throw from shortstop Jhonny Peralta. The run scored on a bases-loaded groundout by Nick Markakis.
In the Atlanta third, after hits by Ender Inciarte and Erick Aybar, first baseman Freeman ripped a three-run homer to straight-way center to make it 4-0.
The Cardinals got a pair of runs back in the fourth, thanks to a run-scoring hit from Peralta and Jedd Gyorko sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, after hits by Freeman and Markakis, Garcia hit a three-run homer with two outs, stretching the Braves' lead to 7-2.
Pinch-hitter Kolten Wong led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to make it 7-3. It was the 12th pinch-hit homer of the season for the Redbirds, adding to the franchise record established last week.
The Cardinals got a pair of runs in the eighth, with pinch-hitter Matt Adams and Tommy Pham getting RBIs. But two-run shots from Inciarte and Matt Kemp in the top of the ninth pushed the Atlanta lead to 11-5. Late in the inning, Chase d'Aruand had a bases-loaded double that drove in two more runs to make it 13-5.
Martinez (10-7) started and took the loss, working just five innings.
The Braves outhit the Cards 15-11, getting three-hit games from Inciarte (home run, two RBIs) and Freeman (home run, three RBIs) and Markakis (one RBI).
Holiday led the Redbirds with three singles, with Peralta adding two hits and an RBI. The Cardinals made the game's only two errors and stranded seven in the loss.
