Braves' Kevin Gausman drops appeal, will serve 5-game suspension

PHOENIX _ Braves starter Kevin Gausman dropped his appeal of a five-game suspension for throwing at Marlins starter Jose Urena on May 3.

Gausman was suspended and given an undisclosed fine for throwing at Urena, who was suspended for intentionally hitting Ronald Acuna in a game last August.

The righty appealed the suspension, which was announced Monday, and has made two starts in that span. The timing is smart on his part: Gausman started Saturday, and with an off-day Monday, beginning his suspension Sunday could allow him to come back on six days rest.

In other words, Gausman could return Saturday and pitch on an extra day of rest.

Gausman, 28, has a 4.50 ERA, striking out 46 and walking 17 through his first eight starts.
