Braveheart sequel among Scottish-themed films announced for Edinburgh International Film Festival

A sequel to Braveheart is among the Scottish-themed films announced for this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The festival will have a number of Scottish films, actors and filmmakers in its 2019 programme.

The sequel to Mel Gibson's hit Braveheart sees Angus Macfadyen reprise his role as Robert the Bruce in a film of the same name.

It's the latest feature film about the Scottish king's life and follows Outlaw King, in which Chris Pine starred as the monarch.

Macfadyen's film continues the story of his character last seen in the 1995 classic.

The film festival will open with the European Premiere of Ninian Doff’s Boyz in the Wood, featuring a star-studded Scottish cast.

Also on the programme is the Dundee-set Schemers from David McLean and Scheme Birds, a documentary set in Motherwell.

In addition, celebrated Scottish actor Brian Cox will star alongside Blythe Danner in the powerful and atmospheric thriller Strange But True.

World premiere of Mrs Lowry & Son will be the closing gala for this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival 

There's also an opportunity to see the TV series Good Omens on the big screen.

A stunning new adaptation of the bestselling fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, it stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen. They play an demon and an angel who join forces to save the world.

Other events confirmed for the EIFF include a showing of Toy Story 4 ahead of its official release date,.

Film Fest in the City is coming back to St Andrew Square for awesome outdoor screenings this June is also returning to St Andrews Square, sponsored by Edinburgh Live. This free outdoor event will screen several films between Jun 14 and 16.

EIFF Artistic Director Mark Adams said: "Edinburgh International Film Festival has a long history of supporting and showcasing the very best Scotland has to offer and 2019 will be no exception.

Isabel Davis, executive director at Screen Scotland said: "This year’s EIFF shows that Scotland is brimming with talent, from the high octane cast in Ninian Doff’s Boyz in the Wood, to the phenomenal feature documentary Scheme Birds, bringing this TriBeCa award winner home to Scotland.

"The new wave of Scottish writers and directors through the Scottish Film. Talent Network’s Scottish Shorts strand promise great things for the future."
