Brave young cancer patient, 3, emulates Olympic heroes

A three year old cancer patient who lost the ability to walk emulated the heroes of the Tokyo Olympics on a toy bike.

Henry, aged three, lost the ability to walk after being diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukaemia in February 2020.

Henry, who is now learning to walk again, recently crossed a finish line on a special track on the oncology ward where he is being treated at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

His mum Charlotte said: “Having an activity that encourages him to get moving and allows him to have fun has brought him so much joy.

"You’ll often find him on the ward riding his bike and giggling as he pretends to chase the staff. Seeing Henry cross the finish line after all his hard work was heart warming. I can’t wait for the day he crosses the finish line on his treatment. “

Alder Hey Children’s Charity donated three static exercise bikes to their oncology ward to help patients' physical and mental health.

Staff at the unit have encouraged some of the patients to take part in a virtual trip from Liverpool to Tokyo on the bikes.

The patients also created a map on the ward to show where they were up to on their journey. The ward recently completed the challenge and travelled from Liverpool to Tokyo in 60 days.

The physio team said: “We loved that it was a team effort and to see the children giving it their all on the bikes on the ward reminded us to get up and moving every day ourselves.”

A spokesperson for Alder Hey said: "We are feeling good this Friday, because Ward 3B made the finish line for their Road to Tokyo Challenge.

"The challenge involved patients, parents and staff virtually travelling the distance from Liverpool to Tokyo in 60 days for Tokyo2020. They swam, ran, propelled and rowed to add to a total of 9466km.

"The three static exercise bikes, which were kindly donated by Alder Hey Charity, really came in handy, as the aim was to encourage physical activity in children on the ward, as well as benefit their mental health."
