Brave woman fights off masked knifeman with a broom handle in south London

This is the heroic moment a shopkeeper fights off a masked knifeman with a broom as she seeks to protect her shop.

CCTV footage shows two men armed with a kitchen knife burst into Lees Foodstore in Catford.

The shopkeeper instantly ducks behind the till as the men ransack the off-licence in a bid to steal cigarettes from behind the counter.

With her husband wrapped around the thug’s legs, she whacks him with a broom handle.

In the struggle, the robber falls into a display stand sending confectionary flying into the air as she tries to clear them out of the shop.

The hooded man yanks the wooden pole out of her hands and throws it away.

The robbers are bundled out of the shop with their haul and the woman stops the man from chasing after them.

The suspect gets the brush off (Met Police)

Lewisham police tweeted out an appeal asking the public to look hard at the footage of the robbery at 8am on August 3.

They asked: “Can you name them?

“Suspects have entered Lees Foodstore and produced a kitchen knife.

“Suspect goes behind the counter and steals cigarettes.”
