Brave Scots boy who overcame five brain tumours suffers setback as docs find fluid in his head

A brave Scots schoolboy who has battled five brain tumours has had his hopes of returning to school dashed after doctors found fluid in his head.

Kieran Crighton is undergoing crucial surgery today at Glasgow's  Royal Hospital for Children, to drain fluid on his brain after the 15-year-old complained of severe headaches.Kieran, from Kilwinning, had planned to join his pals and return to school tomorrow after shielding for five months, but the teen will now have at least a three week wait before he can step foot back in the classroom.

Mum Senga, 51, said: "It's a shame because he was desperate to get back and see his pals, but they can't wait around to do this surgery so he will just need to wait a wee bit longer.

"He had complained of headaches and they were just getting worse so I took him to the doctor and they sent him for a scan and found fluid on his head and neck. They say it might be scar tissue so they need to drain it. It's a worry."

Two years ago medics discovered five brain tumours on Kieran's brain and he was diagnosed with a rare form of Medulloblastoma.

Following the devastating diagnosis Kieran underwent surgery to have the biggest tumour removed.

However the surgery left the teen with posterior fossa syndrome which meant he was unable to walk, speak or swallow.

Senga added: "Because of Kieran's condition we have been shielding since the beginning of all this so he was really looking forward to getting back to school, but he will be in hospital instead. It's a wee shame."

The family are current having their Ayrshire home adapted to accommodate Kieran's needs.

Senga says: "We are in limbo just now and had a few set backs with lockdown and everything, but hopefully the extension won't be too much longer and Kieran can start to have as normal a life as possible. He has been through enough."
