Brave passengers pin down 'knifeman' on train before he is arrested

Brave passengers on a train between Manchester and Liverpool pinned down a man armed with a knife before anyone was hurt.

The offender was restrained before around 10 officers from British Transport Police swarmed around him and placed him under arrest.

Police arrived on the scene at Manchester Oxford Road station at 7.19pm last night and "quickly" arrested the man on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, reports the Manchester Evening News .

One eyewitness said "some guy was being held on the floor" after being "pulled of the train to Liverpool ."

An eyewitness said: "I came to the train station and then at the barrier the train staff said nobody could leave the platform. I think it was a Northern train that the man got off.

“Some people were still on the train. People were pinning the man down, that was members of the public.

“Then the police came, maybe about 10 or more officers. They handcuffed him and strapped his ankles together.

“It was really scary to see that. People were a bit shaken and they were shocked.”

A spokeswoman from British Transport Police said: "At 7.19pm today (25 October) officers from British Transport Police and Greater Manchester Police were called to Manchester Oxford Road station after reports of a man in possession of a knife.

“Police officers were quickly on scene and detained a man. The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, he is being taken to custody.

“There are no reported injuries and there is nothing to suggest this incident is terror related at this time.”
