Brave parents die after jumping in sea to save struggling son, 13, from drowning

Two brave parents have died after jumping into the sea to save their 13-year-old son from drowning.

Felisberto Sampaio, 43, and Inalda Sampaio, 42, braved the waves after noticing their son struggling in the sea on Camaçari Beach in João Pessoa City, Paraíba State, Brazil.

Local fishermen and another family member were able to save the teenager, but his parents tragically died.

The emergency services arrived on the scene and managed to drag the couple out of the water.

They tried to resuscitate the parents on the beach, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

The orphaned teenager was treated by paramedics on the beach before being taken to a nearby hospital where he is said to be recovering well.

The victim's local priest Leonardo Meneses sent his condolences to the victims' loved ones.

He said: "I know the circumstances are very painful and difficult for us to understand.

"Only eternity will explain to us all the mysteries of life."

It is unclear if the local authorities are investigating the couple's death at around 10am on January 10.

In 2019, a four-year-old boy and his father drowned in a double tragedy while on holiday in Spain.

Sunbathers, including families with children, watched in horror as lifeguards went into the sea to rescue the boy whose body was spotted floating in the water.

He was unconscious and they started resuscitation until emergency medics arrived on the scene.

His heartbroken mother then realised her 29-year-old husband was also missing and a major search was launched, with a police helicopter landing on the beach of Riells de L'Escala in Girona.

As the search continued, it was revealed that the boy had died. Both victims were of French nationality and believed to have been on a family holiday in Spain.
