Brave off duty Dublin Fire Brigade member helps save swimmer in Waterford

A brave Dublin firefighter was "instrumental" in helping to save a swimmer who got into difficulty off the coast off Waterford earlier today.

Alex Daly was off duty but that didn't stop her springing in to action when she noticed the person in difficulty in Dunmore East.

The courageous firefighter and paramedic swam out to the struggling swimmer and kept them afloat for 20 minutes until the local lifeboat arrived.

Dublin Fire Brigade took to Twitter to express their pride at the Swords-based hero.

They said: "We are proud to hear that off-duty Swords Firefighter/Paramedic Alex Daly was instrumental in a successful sea rescue at Dunmore East earlier today.

"She spotted a swimmer in difficulty and swam to them, keeping them afloat for 20 minutes, until the arrival of @DunmoreEastRNLI."

Twitter users were quick to heap praise on Alex, commenting "well done" under the post while one woman also added, "amazing work".
