Brave little Leukemia sufferer will lead Liverpool heroes out at Anfield today

A Liverpool-mad seven-year-old who has been suffering with Leukemia for four years will have his dreams come true as he leads his heroes out at Anfield.

Little Jayden McKiernan is from Dublin and has always wanted to watch the Reds at their famous ground - but his illness has meant he has never been able to make the journey to Liverpool.

But thanks to the efforts of Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson, the Reds and a local business Jayden is preparing for the best day of his life.

After years of treatment, Jayden's strength has improved recently and his family shared some tweets asking if anyone could help them get tickets for a Reds home game.

As Jayden's dad Mick Clare explained, they didn't hold out much hope until a message came in from the Mayor of Liverpool.

Mick said: "We didn't expect much and then last week we got a message on Twitter from Joe Anderson asking for our phone number.

"He rang me on Sunday morning and said he was able to get four tickets for the Liverpool-Southampton match today.

"As if that wasn't good enough - he said he had spoken to Liverpool and arranged for Jayden to be the mascot for the day and lead the Reds out onto the pitch.

"We couldn't believe it, Jayden was crying because he was so excited."

The tickets have been provided by local businessman Paul Flanagan, who has also arranged for a hotel.

The family - who have relations in Liverpool - arrived in the city last night and are now preparing for a truly memorable day.

Mick said: "We are just so grateful to everyone who has made this happen, Jayden has been doing so well with his treatment and this is an amazing way to celebrate it.

"His favourite player is Mo Salah and he can't wait to meet him.

"We have lots of family in Ireland and as far away as Australia who will all be looking out for Jayden as he walks out onto the pitch."

Mick took to twitter to thank Mayor Anderson and Liverpool for their efforts with a picture of an excited Jayden.

He said: "Tomorrow morning this little man off St. John’s Ward Crumlin is walking the Reds onto the Anfield pitch. What an experience for him and deserved. Huge thanks to @mayor_anderson for what he did. @LFC for everything."

Mayor Anderson responded: "Hope the brave little warrior Jayden has a great day, he deserves it after all he’s been through, he will get a great reception at Anfield from Liverpool fans and I know @LFC will look after you all. See you before your return to Dublin."
