Brave little Harry born with only half a heart defies odds to walk into school

Just two years ago doctors warned little Harry Lee would never walk again.

But this week he stepped through the school gates.

Harry, five, was born with only half his heart working.

Open-heart surgery failed in September 2018 and he suffered pneumonia, a stroke and sepsis.

He spent three months fighting for his life before being allowed home on Christmas Eve.

Harry will need a heart transplant and appeared on the front page of the Daily Mirror in December, urging families to consider organ donation.

Mum Claire of Stourbridge, West Mids, said: “Dropping Harry off for the first time, I was incredibly proud.

"He was so excited to go to big school and he immediately looked like he belonged there.

"It made my heart burst.”

Claire and her husband Steve, both 40, spent five years trying for a baby before they conceived Harry through IVF, but at the 20-week scan hypoplastic left heart syndrome was diagnosed.

It meant the left side of his heart was too small to work.

Charity Little Hearts Matter helped Harry’s family decide whether to send him to school.

Claire added: “That information has been helpful, but there is no advice specifically for Harry, given his profound health issues.

“Harry... deserves that same chance to learn and socialise as other children.”
