Brave lifeboat crew saves struggling sailors following strong tides and wind at Dublin coastline

A brave lifeboat crew have saved a number of struggling swimmers following strong tides and wind at Dublin's coastline.

Howth RNLI rescued four people in an inflatable dinghy after they struggled to make it back to shore.

The RNLI launched an inshore lifeboat earlier today as the small group struggled to return from Ireland's eye to Howth harbour.

The incident occurred at 6.50pm on Saturday 8 May 2021.

Weather conditions gave good visibility at the time but there was a strong southerly wind and a powerful tide.

The volunteer lifeboat crew quickly located the dinghy which was struggling to make progress back to Howth harbour.

The four people aboard were all wearing life jackets and were in good spirits according to the RNLI.

The volunteer lifeboat crew took the dinghy in tow and returned safely to Howth Harbour.

Stephen Harris, Howth RNLI Deputy Launch Authority spoke about the callout.

He said: “When the call was raised by a concerned member of the public we were delighted to help the four people this evening.

“They all had their life jackets and safety gear but were just not aware that they were not making any headway trying to return to harbour.

“We were happy to assist and they were extremely grateful.”

The RNLI provides an on call 24/7 search and rescue lifeboat service.
