Brave Gosforth schoolboy vows to be 'up and about soon' after heartbreak of having foot amputated

A schoolboy has had to have a foot amputated after a road accident - but the courageous youngster has vowed to get his life "back to normal" as soon as possible.

Harry Gibson, 10, was injured after a collision with a car on Great North Road, in Gosforth, Newcastle, on May 19.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment and it was hoped his right foot would be saved.

But this week the family were given the heartbreaking news that his foot would have to be amputated.

Harry, a pupil at Gosforth Central Middle School, who loves playing football, has been documenting his experiences on TikTok and spoke about the decision to remove his foot. He also thanked all the people who have supported him.

He said: "It's been really hard. I've got some extremely bad news. My foot has to be cut off, it has to be gone.

"It's really bad for me, I don't want it to happen. But it has to go. It's really bad news."

The operation took place on Thursday and the youngster remains in hospital as he recovers from the surgery.

However his family say the brave lad is looking forward to getting back up again. His dad Guy, 45, mum Donna, 32, and brother Jack, eight, are awaiting his return home.

Guy, a gas technician, from Gosforth, said: "Harry is in good spirits. He says he can't wait to get out of hospital and get on with his life. He just wants to get back to normal as soon as he can."

He explained the accident happened after Harry spotted a friend on the other side and stepped into the road.

He was then struck by a car. The family do not believe the driver was to blame.

Harry now hopes to become an ambassador for road safety and wants to raise awareness.

It is also hoped that a prosthetic foot can be fitted for him in the future.

"He just wants to be up and about again," said Guy. "He's on the road to recovery."

Loved ones have started a fundraising drive to support the family and nearly £3,000 has already been raised through a Gofundme page. Donations can be made here.
