Brave kayaking tour guide helps Dublin Fire Brigade rescue two men who jumped into the River Liffey to save dog

A brave kayaking tour guide helped Dublin Fire Brigade rescue two men who got into difficulty on Thursday afternoon after they jumped into the River Liffey to save a dog.

Kayaker Mike was working with a group on the water at around 2pm when he was called into action unexpectedly.

Californian holidaymaker Stacy Walsh was on the group tour with Dublin company City Kayaking when her tour guide spotted something in the distance and headed off in a 'power boat'.

She told Dublin Live: "We saw emergency vehicles speeding by. We could see them on the bridge near the Four Courts and they were looking into the water.

"There was a tour group of about 20 of us and we didn't really know what was happening.

"All of a sudden, our tour guide Mike had gone and was headed for what looked to be a person who was struggling in the water but it actually turned out to be two men."

Mike with the help of Dublin Fire Brigade managed to lift the two men out of the water and onto the boat.

Stacy continued: "The whole group was confused more so than shocked as to what was going on.

"Then, we saw one of the men climbing up the stairs near the edge and he was in his underwear.

"It was only then when our tour guide came back to us that we found out that the two men had jumped in after a dog."

Rescue swimmers and firefighters from Phibsborough and Tara Street Station helped with the rescue and they are currently trying to get in touch with the dog owner.
