Brave domestic violence survivor Jessica Bowes urges abuse victims to seek help

Campaigner Jessica Bowes has urged domestic abuse victims to ask for help.

The mum-of-three was left with physical and psychological scars after the father of her kids violently attacked her.

The savage assault broke every bone in her face.

Brave Ms Bowes waived her anonymity and appeared on the telly to raise awareness of the services available to those in abusive relationships.

Ms Bowes said that people in abusive relationships need three things.

She told Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show: “You need to go and see a solicitor and get some advice and get some court intervention. You need Garda protection.

"And it's so important that you link in with an agency because the support that you get in the agency is actually life changing."

Ms Bowes revealed that she had hope for the future, especially when it came to her beloved children.

“There's no cloud over us, there's hopefully nobody ever going to show up at the door at three o'clock in the morning.

RTE viewers had emotional reaction to Claire Byrne Live special on Hawe family 'Her Name is Clodagh'

"I used to be going around with my head in a spin in a crisis from day-to-day, and I hated my life. I did for a while, and now I love it."

Ms Bowes also stressed that organisations like Women’s Aid and Samaritans have several services that help those caught in abusive relationships.

She added: “The services they can provide in terms of safety planning and court support and counselling, that's what you need.

“You need someone to listen to you and support you and believe you and that's exactly what you'll get when you pick up the phone."

Ms Bowes believes that the domestic abuse laws in Ireland aren't as strict as they should be.
