Brave Cork man paralysed in freak accident during Storm Emma set to return home

A brave young man who was paralysed after a horror accident during Storm Emma is set to return home to his family.

Jack O'Driscoll, 20, from Mayfield, Co Cork was left paralysed from the shoulders down after a freak fall on March 1 of this year.

He suffered a serious injury to his spine when he fell on snow and ice, fracturing C1 vertebrae in his neck.

Jack has spent months recovering in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the Mater Hospital in Dublin and the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.

And Jack was quick to highlight the "crazy" outpouring of support since the accident, with a GoFundMe launched to help his recovery raising a staggering €140,000.

He said: "I am in absolute awe of the support I have received. It's crazy the number of people who get behind you."

The Cork man also revealed that he is getting closer and closer to a return home, and set out his plans for the future.

He added: "I probably will need further surgery in Dublin but I am working on rehabilitation in the gym and with exercises.

"The aim is over the next couple of weeks to get home. The house renovation is done.

"The equipment for me to be able to get out of the wheelchair into bed, I'm just waiting on that.

"I am starting to be able to hold my wrists up and get more control over them.

"Every week there is some small goal, small achievements. I am getting something back every week. I am getting stronger all the time.

"My aim is to come back to college. I want to be as independent as I can, get myself in and out of a push chair, driving, getting myself dressed in the morning."
