Brave builder disarms knifeman in lunchtime standoff as police called to Deansgate

A man carrying a knife on Deansgate was disarmed after he confronted a builder who pulled the weapon out of his hands.

Videos of the incident, which happened at around 12.20pm this afternoon (Monday) show the armed man facing off against another man wearing high-visibility clothing outside the Wok2Walk restaurant in the city centre.

The construction worker, who was seen carrying a large shop sign to protect himself, was able to get close to the other man and rip the knife from his hands before throwing it away.

The pair were then involved in a confrontation on the pavement, with several other people appearing to try and break them up.

Footage shows the disarmed knifeman picking up the discarded shop sign and appearing to march back towards the construction worker, who pulls the sign from his hands.

Police arrived soon afterwards and arrested the man.

A GMP spokesperson said: "At around 12.25pm this afternoon (7 June) police were called to a report of an altercation between two people on Deansgate near to the Slug and Lettuce.

"A man with a knife was detained by officers and has been taken to custody.

"No injuries were reported."

Following the arrest, police blocked the road while they conducted further enquiries.

The man was detained in a police van, with officers leaving the scene just before 1pm.

An eyewitness claimed that the hooded weapon-wielder had ‘caused trouble’ in the Greggs store on Deansgate, and then confronted builders outside the eatery.
