Every match day at Everton, Alfie Fitzsimmons bundles up in his coat and scarf and sets up his stall selling badges and keyrings outside the ground.
After his dad Keith took his own life two years ago, the 10-year-old is determined to raise as much as he can for the club’s new mental health facility, to ensure no child suffers in the same way as him.
Although Alfie had counselling and support from his mum Allison, 45, after his dad died, he had no one his own age to speak to, and felt isolated and alone.
So with the help of Everton he set up Alfie’s Squad this year to help youngsters deal with bereavement and speak to other kids going through the same thing.
Already he has raised £7,800, and will receive The Young Fundraiser Award at tomorrow night’s Mirror Pride of Sport Awards, in partnership with TSB.
Ahead of the event hosted by Ben Shephard at Grosvenor House in central London, Alfie, from Liverpool, says: “It’s incredible. It’s going to give a lot more exposure to Alfie’s Squad.”
His mum said: “Even though he was having the worst year of his life, he realised there were other people having a worse time.”
