Brassic star Michelle Keegan blasts 'gloomy' working mums stereotypes on TV

Michelle Keegan slammed "hard done by" working mum stereotypes on TV.

The actress, 32, took aim at the typical portrayal of working class mums as "dark" or "gloomy" in storylines on the TV.

Instead, the former soap star championed her working mum character Erin in Brassic as a "really strong female lead" and "empowering character".

Michelle also celebrated her working mum character for being depicted as "ambitious" and the "mother hen of the group".

She told PlotTwist podcast: "I knew she was going to be a really strong female and I wanted her to be an empowering character.

"A lot of the time you see working class mum's portrayed in a dark way or a gloomy way and hard done by but Erin doesn't feel like that.

"She's ambitious, she's the mother hen of the group and I knew that's how I wanted her to be portrayed, in a positive way not a negative way."

Michelle has tried her hand at acting in comedy Brassic after she had spent years starring in the lead drama Our Girl as Sergeant Georgie Lane.

Her breakout role come in Coronation Street when she played Tina McIntyre in 2007 until 2014.

The Essex based beauty has been holed up at mansion in isolation with her husband Mark Wright and their sausage dog.

Having been torn apart for many years due to work commitments, the couple have finally had a chance to spend lots of time together.

But Michelle admitted the coronavirus quarantine in the UK felt like it had dragged on for six months during a recent radio interview with Heart.

"It feels like it's been six months already, Jamie!" she told radio host Jamie Theakston.
