Brandon Williams’ man coverage skills still give him shot at roster

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Brandon Williams has finally been activated off PUP. He had a back injury that kept him from practicing for more than the first two weeks of training camp.

Now he has a much shorter time frame to try and convince the coaches he deserves a spot on the final roster.

Largely seen as a longshot to make the team this year with a new coaching staff, Williams does have a couple of skills that stand out. Despite his still relative inexperience as a cornerback, he does do one thing well, and he has been solid on special teams his first three years in the league.

“We do feel Brandon excels in man coverage,” said head coach Kliff Kingsbury Sunday morning. “That is going to be a big part of our defense, so we’re hoping he excels when he gets his opportunity. (He is a) talented athlete and has done a nice job on special teams here.”

Williams currently is deep on the depth chart and is getting worked back into practice. Perhaps he will be given playing time when the Cardinals take on the Oakland Raiders on Thursday.

Will those two things be enough for a fourth season on the team? He has two weeks to show it.
