Brandon Scherff is not worried about a future contract extension

The NFL off-season is a time where new players get to play, and veteran players get paid.

Coming into the spring and summer months of 2019, Washington Redskins GM Bruce Allen said that the team was going to make a point of getting offensive lineman Brandon Scherff a well-deserved contract extension.

Scherff has played four seasons in Washington, though his year was cut short in 2018 due to injury. Still, the veteran OL is a source of consistency on an otherwise tumultuous line, and an extended contract would go a long way in confirming that his services are well appreciated.

So why has no deal been made as of yet?

“We’ve been talking, but I’m not really worried about that,” he said on Monday, via NBC Sports. “I’m here for another year, so that’s all I’m worried about right now. Everything will take care of itself.”

Scherff has made two Pro Bowls in his short career and has been extremely durable up until a torn pectoral muscle ended his season last year. Now he is easing back into the workload and taking everything — including his future finances — a step at a time.

With one year left on his deal, Scherff is essentially playing with house money. He has already proved to the Redskins that he is worth top-dollar in the NFL, and should they allow him to enter the free agency market next season, that is surely what he will receive.

But if Washington hopes to hold onto one of their staples on offense, they had better pay that man his money, and they’d better do it soon.
