Brandon Flowers
Flower by name... Brandon Flowers

Brandon Flowers holds this week’s UK album chart No 1 with his second solo record, The Desired Effect. The Killers frontman went head to head with fellow indie frontman Paul Weller, but eventually Flowers’ album finished 5,000 combined chart sales ahead of the rock veteran.

The Desired Effect is Flowers’ sixth UK No 1 album – including his success with the Killers – and his second solo No 1 album after 2010’s Flamingo. Paul Weller’s Saturns Pattern, this week’s No 2, becomes the former Jam frontman’s 16th top 10 album.

Last week’s No 1, Wilder Mind by Mumford & Sons, is down two places to No 3, Taylor Swift’s 1989, reaping the rewards of her a-list video for Bad Blood, is at No 4, while Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour completes the top 5.

There were a few new entries in the top 10 – including the return of Faith No More, who scored their fourth UK top 10 album this week with Sol Invictus, in at No 6. Mariah Carey earns her first top 10 album in seven years this week with her retrospective #1 to Infinity at No 8.

In the singles charts, OMI’s Cheerleader has firmly established itself as one of the year’s most omnipresent anthems – with the artist extending his reign at the top for a fourth week.

Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s See You Again is up from No 3 to No 2 this week, while LunchMoney Lewis’s Bills, Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood ft Kendrick Lamar, and Skrillex, Diplo and Justin Bieber’s Where Are U Now make up the rest of the top five respectively.
