Brandon fire: Fire crews battle massive factory fire at recycling centre

A huge fire has broken out at a recycling centre, causing thick black smoke to billow across the sky.

A factory is on fire just outside Brandon on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, with smoke seen at least 15 miles away.

A number of residents say their cars have been covered in ash from the fire at a commercial building on Fengate Drove, Weeting, with a number of local businesses evacuated as a precaution.

Locals have been urged to keep their windows and doors closed until further notice.

Norfolk Police were also called to the scene at around 2.20pm and have shut a number of nearby roads.

It's not yet known what caused the fire, but there are currently no reports of any injuries.

Motorists have been taking to social media to share footage of the thick smoke spreading across the skyline with significant plumes of smoke seen in Bury St Edmunds, some 15 miles away from the incident.

A spokesperson for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service told SuffolkLive: "We can confirm that following a 999 call made at 2pm today, 12 appliances (6 from Norfolk and 6 from Suffolk), are attending a commercial building fire at Fengate Drove, Weeting.

"This is an ongoing incident a this time – there are currently no reports of persons unaccounted for or of any injuries."

10 fire engines have also been supplied from nearby Suffolk.
