Brando can go one better in Sprint Cup at Haydock

Brando is my pick for the Betfair Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock this afternoon.

He was second in this race 12 months ago and was again runner-up behind Advertise last time out in France.

With that rival and Ten Sovereigns both absent today, Kevin Ryan's runner could go very close at a decent price.

It remains to be seen how most of this field go in the soft conditions, but another who won't mind them is The Tin Man.

He won this contest 12 months in heavy conditions, but hasn't hit those heights in three runs so far this season. Don't be surprised if he bounces back here though.

First In Line was second across the line over the same distance at York on his last start, but could return to winning ways in today's opener at Haydock for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori.

He has won two of his four starts and although he faces a number of rivals here who won last time out, he should go very close.

Miss O Connor has done nothing wrong so far, winning all three of her starts, but preference is for Sharja Bridge in the Bet In Play On The Betfair Exchange Superior Mile Stakes.

Roger Varian's five-year-old has been running in much better races than this contest recently and he landed a big handicap on Champions Day at Ascot last year in soft conditions.

Meanwhile at Ascot, Salute The Soldier can continue his recent good form in the Cunard Handicap.

He has been running well since going back to seven furlongs, finishing second in a Goodwood handicap before landing a stronger contest over the same course and distance last month.

This is hugely competitive contest, but he should go close again at a big price.

Also at Ascot, Kieran O'Neill could record back-to-back wins on board She's Got You for trainer John Gosden after landing a contest over the same distance at  Newmarket last time.

And William Buick could taste success on Cirque Royal in the Lavazza Stakes.

This is his first run since being gelded and prior to that he was in good form, winning two contests at Chelmsford and Lingfield repectively.

We tipped up Romanised when he scored at Deauville last month and Ken Condon's star performer could be successful on French soil again tomorrow [Sunday].

He runs in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp where he looks set to face some very talented rivals.

The fact his trainer has opted to go here instead of Irish Champion Stakes or the QEII at Ascot is interesting and he should give a good account of himself again in what will be his final run of the season.

Bet of the weekend - Romanised - 2.50 Longchamp Sunday 5/2

Romanised can make it back-to-back Group 1s in France on Sunday for Kildare trainer Ken Condon after his impressive win at Deauville last time out.
