Brand new garda cars given the rainbow look as they prepare to roll out for Dublin Pride 2019

Gardai have gone for a colourful new look this month as they gear up to take part in this year's Dublin Pride.

This year will be the first time that uniformed gardai will take part in the festival which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community.

To mark the big event, they've overhauled their classic look posting pictures of some brand new colourful cars.

They said: "We are really looking forward to participating in Dublin Pride Parade on Saturday 29th June 2019, and we’ve had a bit of a makeover for the occasion!"

Last month garda commissioner Drew Harris announced they would be taken part as part of a number of measures aimed at reflecting the "diverse society we serve."

The move came along with a number of other measures including changing uniform rules to allow for religious clothing such as hijabs and turbans .

He said: "As you are all aware, society is becoming increasingly diverse.

“As the GRA has rightly pointed out, it is essential that An Garda Síochána reflects the diverse society we serve.

“That is why our uniform policy has been amended to allow the wearing of the hijab, or turban, as an item of Garda uniform.

“This year An Garda Síochána will take part in Dublin’s Gay Pride in uniform for the first time.”
