Bramley flat fire: top floor resident tells how no smoke alarm sounded during the blaze

Matthew Wootton, 33, told how he smelt smoke while in his top-floor flat while watching TV at about 8.30.

After the smell got “stronger and stronger” he went out to his balcony where he saw “thick black smoke” coming from five floors below.

Incredibly, NHS worker Matthew heard no smoke alarms at all during the terrifying fire - which is understood to have now been put out.

He told how he called the fire brigade then rushed to alert his next door neighbour.

As he and he and his flat mate were running down a staircase to get out of the building the person who lived in the burning flat was trying to gain access to the their flat.

Matthew said: “As soon as he opened the door thick smoke came billowing out so I told him to close the door and we got out.

“But there were no alarms going off.

“If I didn't smell it I wouldn't have known - there should be some sort of working system in place.

"After Grenfell and the fire we had here last year - I just thought people should know about this."
