Bramcote schools shut following huge overnight fire

Schools in Bramcote have closed their doors to pupils following a huge fire at a nearby disused school.

Both Bramcote Hills Primary School and Bramcote College are shut today after a fire at a disused school off Derby Road.

The college said they were following advice from the fire service, confirming that all learning would be done online.

In a tweet, Bramcote College said: "Urgent update: We have been advised by the fire service that we must close today. Please do not send your children to school. All learning will be done online."

Bramcote Hills Primary School also confirmed to Nottinghamshire Live that they would be closed for today.

The closures come in light of a fire at a derelict college building off the A52 Derby Road, behind the Bramcote Leisure Centre.

As many as 60 firefighters attended the incident - and the A52 was closed in both directions for a period.

Ilkeston Road in Bramcote remained closed between the Sherwin Island and Stanley Drive.

Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at around 1.30am on Thursday, September 16.

Incident commander Andy Macey told Nottinghamshire Live that the firefighters were unsure where the fire began.

But he said it will be investigated and hopefully determined by the end of the day.
