Brains pub to stay shut until new tenant is found

Brains will not be reopening one of its Swansea pubs until a new tenant is found, with plans to redeploy staff in the meantime.

The chain confirmed that Cockett Inn, located at Cockett Road, will not re-open immediately after the Welsh Government's fire-break comes to an end on November 9.

But it insists it will only be a "short-term measure" as the pub is being moved from its managed estate to its tenanted estate.

It means that until a new tenant is found for the pub, its doors will remain shut.

In the meantime, it will be looking to redeploy staff to its pubs elsewhere.

A statement from Brains Brewery read: "Through these uncertain times, we have had to make some very difficult decisions to ensure that Brains continues to have a strong future in Wales.

"As the hospitality industry has been massively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are now considering a number of business options to minimise the impact on our staff and ultimately our customers.

"It is with much regret that we can confirm that we will not be re-opening The Cockett Inn on Monday, November 9 as previously planned.

"However, this is a short-term measure, and will be looking at redeploying resources where appropriate and moving the pub from our managed estate across to our tenanted estate."

The statement added that the team at Brains has "worked tirelessly" over the last few months to ensure staff and customers remained safe.

"We will continue to do so when we open our pub estate next week," it added.

Back in July, we reported how Brains had decided to sell The George in Mumbles, another of its Swansea pubs.
