Brain tumour-battling 10-year-old donates her own hair to cancer patients after finishing chemo

When chemotherapy robbed little Lilly Hartley of her hair, a wig from the Little Princess Trust helped provide some comfort.

So when her long locks finally grew back, selfless Lilly knew just what she wanted to do - donate her hair to other young cancer fighters like her.

Lilly, from Chester-le-Street, was just three years old when doctors discovered the brain tumour which would lead to the youngster undergoing major brain surgery ten times, and rob her of the sight in her left eye.

She underwent her last round of chemo in 2015, at the age of six, and since then her hair has been growing back while Lilly throws herself into life, despite the inoperable tumour which is currently "behaving itself" but can never fully be removed.

So it was a proud moment for mum Clare and dad David when Lilly announced she wanted to get a very special haircut.

Golf professional David, 32, said: "It's the first time she's had a lot of hair cut off since her chemo. Lilly said she wanted to do it, and then one of her teachers, Claire Canham, at St Benet's in Ouston, said she'd do it at the same time to support her.

"Now her hair has grown back it's come back quite thick, and she said she definitely wanted it to go to the other boys and girls who are poorly."

One of her classmate's parents who was a hairdresser came in to do the cut, and Lilly is thrilled with her stylish new look - as well as the fact that she'll be helping  youngsters just like her.

"She's over the moon with it now," David said.

"She's made over £1,000 in sponsorship as well as donating the hair itself.  It was emotional for her to do it, but she loved the fact that it would be going to other children with cancer."

Lilly said: "I love my new hair. Hopefully when I go into hospital I'll see other girls who've lost their hair like I did, and they'll be wearing my hair."
