Brain damaged boy who suffered traumatic birth at Bristol hospital handed up to £20 million in NHS payout

Hospital bosses in Bristol have agreed to pay millions of pounds to help cover care costs for a six-year-old boy who suffered brain damage at birth.

The High Court hearing was told, one of the boy's shoulders became stuck during birth which caused his life-changing disabilitiy.

Despite the mum, who cannot be named for legal reasons, telling doctors she experienced a similar problem with her first child, no other options of delivery were discussed.

Barrister Edward Bishop QC represented the family.

He told the London hearing, staff had not appreciated the difficulties the woman had experienced when previously giving birth.

Mr Bishop QC told Mrs Justice Lambert that NHS bosses at the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust had agreed to a £5.8 million lump sum plus regular payments throughout the boy's life.

He said the package could top £20 million if the boy lives as long as some doctors think he might.

Bosses have apologised for "failings in care" during the boy's birth.

Mrs Justice Lambert approved the settlement.

Mr Bishop gave no detail of the boy's disabilities.
