Bragging rights on the line as Ireland aim to top world rankings in England clash

Ireland could become the number one team in world rugby for the first time in their history if they beat England tomorrow.

The mind games are sure to play a part as Joe Schmidt's men return to Twickenham, the site of a historic Grand Slam triumph on St Patrick's Day last year against Eddie Jones' side.

Schmidt's men can leapfrog Wales, who took the place last week, with a win as they continue their warm-ups for next month's World Cup.

A win would see Ireland move top of the rankings for the first time since the current system's introduction in 2003.

With both the Welsh and New Zealand not in action this weekend - both face the prospect of dropping a place down the rankings with England v Ireland and Scotland v France the only tier one fixtures being played.

Wales are currently enjoying top spot in the world rugby rankings for the first time in history after a win over England at the weekend saw New Zealand dethroned from the top for the first time in 509 weeks.

Despite the All Blacks bouncing back to defeat Australia 36-0 a week after they lost 47-26, Wales climbed to the top spot due to the fact they picked up more ranking points for beating an England team ranked higher than Australia.
