Braehead Shopping Centre call in administrators putting future in doubt

The future of Braehead Shopping Centre is in doubt as owners Intu call in administrators.

They have asked KPMG to draw up a plan to take them into administration, the Insider reports this morning.

The move could see the retail landlord's portfolio of shopping centres, such as Manchester's Trafford Centre and Lakeside in Essex, closed in the near future.

Back in March, Intu warned it could go bust having run up debts of nearly £5 billion - with the firm struggling to fill vacant space following the collapse and contraction of many High Street retailers.

The landlord also said that investors had been deterred from giving fresh cash due to "extreme market conditions", with the firm noting today that some of its creditors were not prepared to offer a debt repayment waiver of more than 18 months.

The firm said: "Notwithstanding the progress made with lenders, intu has also appointed KPMG to contingency plan for administration. In the event that intu properties plc is unable to reach a standstill, it is likely it, and certain other central entities, will fall into administration.

"In this situation, all property companies would be required to pre-fund the administrator to provide central services to the shopping centres. If the administrator is not pre-funded then there is a risk that centres may have to close for a period."

The shopping centre was rebranded as Intu Braehead in 2013.
