Braehead Avenue: Enquiries continue into Edinburgh fire after pensioner tragically dies

Enquiries are continuing at an Edinburgh home after a devastating fire on Thursday (July 8).

A 97-year-old woman was confirmed to have died after being rushed to hospital as a result of the blaze, which began in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Both police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue service had been present at the scene on Braehead Avenue as crews worked to put out the fire.

Images and video of the scene have shown large plumes of smoke coming from the upstairs windows and roof of the two-floor property near Cramond.

Fire crews can also be seen using aerial units to reach the top floor of the home, before the fire was extinguished later in the morning.

Tragically, police confirmed a 97-year-old woman was taken to hospital, where she later died.

In their most recent statement, Police Scotland confirmed that enquiries remain ongoing into the incident, with some officers remaining at the scene on Thursday evening.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were made aware of a fire at a property on Braehead Avenue in Edinburgh around 5.40am on Thursday, 8 July, 2021.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. A 97-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where she died a short time later.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
