Bradley Walsh in hysterics over Welsh contestant's unique 'hobby' on Beat the Chasers

Bradley Walsh was left in stitches after hearing about a Welsh game show contestant's unusual "hobby" on Beat the Chasers. The Cardiff contestant, who was only identified as Gareth on the latest episode of the hit ITV game show, left the programme host and the other 'Chasers' in fits of laughter when he explained his bizarre spate of record attempts.

Gareth, who is originally from Caernarfon but now lives in Cardiff, revealed to Walsh that he'd developed a strange "habit in the last few years" - attempting to get his name enshrined in the Guinness Book of Records. But despite trying (and trying by all accounts), university IT administrator Gareth admitted he'd "never been successful" at breaking any of them.

When asked by host Walsh to give examples of his record attempts, Gareth said: "Like throwing a rubber chicken to see how far (it would go) - there's a record for that but I can't remember how far (the record) is now." Gareth went on: "There's one (record) I thought was very beatable which is to try and alphabetise a tin of alphabetti spaghetti - the record is four minutes and I thought that was beatable but it isn't - it takes like 10 (minutes)."

However, it was details of Gareth's attempt to try and break the world record for drinking a litre of gravy in the fastest time that elicited the most laughter from the Chasers. "I tried to drink a litre of gravy but...that was not nice," he said.

When asked by Walsh how close he got to breaking the record, Gareth replied "nowhere near". "It (the record) is something silly like 10 seconds and I got half way and I thought 'no more, I can't do it'" added Gareth, with Walsh jokingly describing the attempt as a "long Sunday lunch."

Walsh then asked: "Have you got any more on the cards where you think 'I could actually do that?' And Gareth was very honest with his answer.

"A lot of them I think I can do but I'm wrong, every time," he said. "So I just have to go through it all again and think 'one day, it'll be my day'."

Walsh suggested that Gareth consider getting listed in the Guinness book as the person who has 'failed to break the most world records', to which Gareth replied "I'll have a look at that'.

Throughout Gareth's stint on the programme, the Chasers would not let him forget about his unpleasant gravy record attempt. His first warm-up question asked 'Which is not a term for fruit cooked in sugar?' with conserve, hors d'oeuvre and preserve all given as possible answers. Despite admitting he 'didn't know' the answer, Gareth guessed correctly with hors d'oeuvre.

Walsh then turned to the Chasers and asked 'what's a hors d'oeuvre?' to which Paul Sinha replied "it's the meal that comes before the gravy" amid howls of laughter from the other quizzers and the audience. Gareth then went into the 'head to head' portion of the show opting to take-on four chasers over 40 seconds with the chance of winning £25,000.

After struggling at the start, Gareth pulled it back towards the latter half of his time limit and at one point looked like he was going to beat the Chasers and grab the money. However, the quiz experts narrowly pipped Gareth to the post with three seconds to spare - a result Gareth said was "very close" and sadly saw him leaving the show empty handed.

And while Gareth ultimately left the stage disappointed, it wasn't the same story for all contestants on the programme. Later on in the show, a US national who now lives in Bury won £60,000 with just one second to spare.

Gareth can be seen on episode 3, series 5 of Beat the Chasers which is available to view now on the ITV Hub.
